The wide, slow-moving river that defines Yola's northern edge — the Benue, the Niger's largest tributary, draining the Adamawa and Cameroon highlands into the central Nigerian plains. The riverbank at Jimeta is the most accessible stretch in town, with informal jetties, dugout canoes, and a string of small fish restaurants.
The Benue is navigable from Yola to its confluence with the Niger during the rainy season, and historically carried much of the trade between northeast Nigeria and the coast. The view from the river bridge at sunset is the city's signature image.
