Yola Central Mosque

The oldest and most important mosque in Yola, established in the 19th century at the founding of the Adamawa Emirate. Repeatedly enlarged and rebuilt, the mosque sits at the heart of old Yola near the Lamido's palace and remains the city's main gathering point for Friday prayers.

Non-Muslim visitors should ask permission before entering and dress modestly. The surrounding alleys of old Yola are the most coherent stretch of pre-colonial urban fabric in the city.

A story
The mosque was founded in 1841 by Modibbo Adama, the Fulani scholar-soldier who carved the Adamawa Emirate out of the upper Benue Valley as a vassal of the Sokoto Caliphate. The town and the mosque grew together; the current building stands on the original site.
