The rocky outcrop of Kufena Hill rises above the northern edge of the old city and offers the best vantage point over Zaria's rooftops. The climb takes about thirty minutes and the views from the top take in the minarets of the Great Mosque, the walls of the Emir's Palace, and — on a clear day — the green expanse of Ahmadu Bello University's campus to the south. The hill has historical significance as a defensive lookout point for the old Hausa kingdom; local guides can tell its stories.
