Eating Out

Cyangugu has a modest but functional eating scene centred on the town market area and the main road down toward the lakefront. Options are simple — grilled fish from Lake Kivu, rice and bean dishes, brochettes (grilled meat skewers), and chapati are the staples. Fresh tilapia from the lake is excellent and appears on almost every menu.

The best spots tend to cluster around the central market and the road leading to the border. Several small restaurants and open-fronted places serve a set lunch of rice, beans, and a protein for a very low price. For something more comfortable, a few guesthouses have dining rooms that serve to non-residents — often the best option for a quiet meal with lake views.

Local fresh fruit — avocados, bananas, passion fruit — is plentiful and cheap at the market and from roadside vendors, and makes a good breakfast or snack. Bottled water and soft drinks are widely available; Rwanda produces good local beer (Primus and Mützig are the standards) which appears everywhere.
