Getting There

By air: Kamembe International Airport (KME) is 3 km north of the town centre and has scheduled flights to Kigali. RwandAir operates this route and journey time is under an hour. The airport is small but reliable.

By road from Kigali: The journey takes 4–5 hours by bus or minibus. Several companies run daily services; the road via Butare (now Huye) passes through the tea-growing highlands and is scenic. The last section before Cyangugu descends steeply toward the lake.

Via Nyungwe: The road from Butare through Nyungwe National Park is spectacular but slow — allow extra time, especially in the wet season. Shared minibuses pass through the park en route to Cyangugu.

From the DRC: The border crossing from Bukavu is open during daylight hours. Visas for Rwanda are available on arrival; DRC visas must be arranged in advance.
