Hôtel des Mille Collines

The Mille Collines — Hotel of the Thousand Hills — is a working four-star hotel in the heart of Kiyovu, and visiting it is one of Kigali's stranger experiences. The poolside terrace where refugees hid in 1994 is now a perfectly pleasant place to have a coffee and watch the city from the hillside. The hotel has become both a pilgrimage site and a functioning luxury property, which creates an odd tension that is itself worth thinking about.

You do not need to be a guest to walk in, have a drink at the bar, or sit by the pool. The hotel is a useful landmark in the city and sits close to several of the best restaurants in Kiyovu. It is worth noting that Paul Rusesabagina's legacy has become complicated since the film's release — he was convicted in Rwanda in 2021 of terrorism charges related to an armed opposition group.

A story
During the 1994 genocide, the hotel's manager Paul Rusesabagina sheltered over 1,200 Tutsi and moderate Hutu refugees inside the building, using his connections and the hotel's international guests as a buffer against the militias outside. The story was told in the 2004 film Hotel Rwanda.
