Things to Do

Kigali is not a city you tick off in an afternoon. The Genocide Memorial is the centrepiece and the starting point for understanding modern Rwanda, but the city rewards you with neighbourhoods to wander, arts spaces to browse, and a local culture that is increasingly confident and outward-looking.

The most surprising thing for first-time visitors is how liveable the city feels. Streets are clean, motos are everywhere, and the hills between neighbourhoods give you sweeping views at every turn. Nyamirambo in the west is the most atmospheric district for walking — a dense, mostly Muslim neighbourhood with tailors, mosques, and markets spilling onto the streets. Kiyovu, closer to the centre, is where embassies and NGOs cluster alongside cafes and galleries.
