Lalibela Restaurant

Lalibela is Kigali's best Ethiopian restaurant, and sharing a meal here is one of the better culinary experiences the city offers. The menu follows the classic Ethiopian format: a large injera flatbread serves as plate, utensil, and accompaniment for an assortment of stews (wot) — lentils, chickpea, beef, lamb — which you tear off and scoop up with pieces of the sourdough bread. Go with at least two people to split a platter properly.

The restaurant is in Kimihurura, a short walk from the Papyrus area and conveniently near several of the city's bars. Pricing is decent for the portion sizes, and the injera is the real thing — proper teff-flour sour fermentation, not a supermarket imitation. It is a good choice for a longer, unhurried dinner.
