Basse Casamance rewards slow travel. The landscape of mangrove creeks, paddy fields, and forest villages is best explored on foot or by pirogue — motorised canoe — rather than by car. Cap Skirring and Ziguinchor are the main hubs, but the real appeal is the territory between them: sacred forests, Diola villages where animist tradition is very much alive, and a coast that feels nothing like the tourist beaches of Saly.
