Kabrousse

Kabrousse is the nearest traditional Diola village to Cap Skirring, a few kilometres south toward the Guinea-Bissau border. It is a real working village rather than a tourist construct — people farm, fish, and live here — and it gives a clear sense of the Diola culture that underlies Cap Skirring's resort overlay. The village has a weekly market where local traders bring produce, palm wine, and goods from across the Casamance, and on market days it has genuine energy.

The area around Kabrousse has sacred forests and groves associated with Diola initiation rites and traditional religion. These spaces are not open to outsiders, and it is important to respect that boundary — do not enter forest areas without explicit permission, and follow your guide's lead on what is appropriate. The Diola are not Muslim in the way northern Senegalese communities tend to be; their traditional religion survives alongside Christianity and a syncretic mix of influences, and Kabrousse is one of the places where that distinctiveness is most visible.
