Victoria Market

The Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market in the centre of Victoria is the commercial and social hub of the Seychelles. Open daily except Sunday, with the best activity in the mornings from around 6am to noon. The ground floor handles fish — enormous parrotfish, red snapper, and barracuda laid out on ice — while the upper level deals in tropical fruit, spices, and vegetables. Stalls sell fresh coconuts, vanilla pods, cinnamon, and dried fish to take home.

The market is a few minutes' walk from the Victoria Clock Tower, a cast-iron replica of the Little Ben clock in London that was erected in 1903 to mark the island's status as a Crown Colony. Around the clock tower, the small city centre has a handful of craft shops, pharmacies, and banks. It is genuinely walkable in an hour — the whole of Victoria fits in a small radius — but the market is the one place where the town feels alive.

A story
Victoria is the smallest capital city in the world by population — fewer than 30,000 people. The market is where that small scale works in the visitor's favour: you can talk to the same fisherman who will cook your dinner, and the vendors who arrive at 5am from the south of the island will be gone by noon.
