Janaale

Small Indian Ocean settlement south of Mogadishu, known locally as Janaale, Gendershe, or Jannaale

Janaale (sometimes called Gendershe or Jannaale) is a small coastal settlement about 60 km south of Mogadishu on the Indian Ocean. It is known for a long stretch of white sand beach that was, before the civil war, one of the more attractive coastal spots accessible from the capital.

The area remains well south of Mogadishu's most active conflict zones, but the road south from Mogadishu passes through territory where al-Shabaab is active. Do not travel here without current security intelligence and reliable local contacts.

Things to Do

Janaale's main draw has always been its beach — a long, undeveloped strip of white sand fronting the Indian Ocean. Before the civil war this coast was a weekend escape for Mogadishu residents. Today it remains quiet, for reasons that have nothing to do with charm.
