Amoud University

The first university in post-war Somaliland, founded 1998

Amoud University sits a few kilometres outside the city centre on a low ridge with mountain views. The campus is modest by any global standard but is impressive in context — a clean, ordered set of brick and concrete buildings serving a country that was effectively starting from zero in the late 1990s.

You can walk onto campus and most staff are happy to talk to a curious visitor. The medical faculty is the largest and the most ambitious — it runs a teaching hospital and has produced a generation of doctors who staff clinics across Somaliland. The university press has published a respectable amount of regional scholarship and is one of the better places in town to pick up books on Somali history.

A story
Amoud opened in 1998 with two faculties, eighty-six students, and equipment scavenged from the secondary school it shared a building with. It was a deliberate statement — Somaliland had declared independence seven years earlier but received no international recognition, and the founders argued that a functioning higher-education system was one of the few things that could make recognition unavoidable. Recognition has not yet followed, but the university now has more than five thousand students.
