Borama Central Market

Daily market mixing local produce, Ethiopian imports, and a busy livestock pen

The central market is the busiest part of Borama on a weekday morning and the natural orientation point for a visit. Vegetables and produce come down from the surrounding highlands; manufactured goods are mostly trucked in from across the Ethiopian border, twenty kilometres away. The result is a mix of locally grown khat, sacks of imported sugar and rice, plastic basins, and Ethiopian coffee.

The livestock section runs adjacent and is worth the short walk — Awdal is sheep and goat country and prices set here ripple across the region. Photography is sensitive in Somaliland; ask before pointing a camera at people. Vendors will frequently invite a curious foreigner to sit for tea, which is the better option for taking the place in.
