Hargeisa Cultural Centre

The Hargeisa Cultural Centre, run by the Redsea Cultural Foundation, opened formally in 2014 and occupies a compound near the city centre. Its main gallery contains antique Islamic manuscripts, traditional Somali artefacts, art paintings, and a remarkable wall of cassette tapes — thousands of recordings that survived the civil war and now represent an irreplaceable archive of Somali cultural memory.

The centre hosts the Hargeisa International Book Fair every July — one of the largest literary festivals in East Africa — and runs year-round exhibitions and community programmes. The building is modest but the collection is not. It is particularly worth visiting for the manuscripts and the cassette archive. Staff are knowledgeable and willing to explain the context of what you are looking at.

A story
The cultural centre houses what is believed to be one of the largest surviving collections of Somali cassette tapes in existence — thousands of recordings that were hidden during the civil war and smuggled out of the country before the bombardment reached them. They represent decades of Somali music, poetry, and oral history that would otherwise have been lost.
