Bloubergstrand

Flat beach 20km north of the city, famous for the classic Table Mountain postcard view

Bloubergstrand is a flat, windswept beach about 20 kilometres north of the city centre on the shore of Table Bay. It is not Cape Town's prettiest or most comfortable beach — the water is cold, the south-easter can be brutal, and the beach itself is exposed and wide rather than sheltered. What it does offer is an unobstructed view straight across the bay to Table Mountain, which rises in its full width from this angle, and this is almost certainly where most of the iconic Table Mountain photographs have been taken.

The stretch of shoreline is also one of the best kitesurfing locations in the world; Big Bay, a few kilometres north, is the main competition venue. If you come on a windy day, the spectacle of dozens of kites against the mountain is spectacular.
