The MyCiti bus is Cape Town's modern rapid transit system, with air-conditioned articulated buses running on dedicated lanes. It covers the city centre, the V&A Waterfront, Sea Point, Camps Bay, Green Point, Bloubergstrand and the airport. Fares are paid with a myconnect card (available at stations and some shops). The system is reliable, clean and straightforward to use — the best option for most tourist journeys.
Uber and Bolt operate throughout the city and are generally the most practical option for point-to-point travel, including at night. Metered taxis exist but are less common than in other African cities — phone bookings or hotel-arranged taxis are safer than flagging one down. The minibus taxis that serve most of the population are cheap but follow informal routes that require local knowledge; not recommended for first-time visitors.
Metrorail suburban trains connect the city centre to Simon's Town (along False Bay), Stellenbosch and other suburbs, but the network has suffered from vandalism, unreliable service and safety concerns. The Simon's Town line is the most used by visitors and is generally manageable during daylight hours. For visiting the Cape Peninsula, the V&A Waterfront and the wine country, renting a car for a day or two gives you the most flexibility.
