Cape Town Stadium

55,000-seat 2010 World Cup stadium between the city and the sea

The Cape Town Stadium was built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, designed by gmp Architects with a translucent roof and a sculpted bowl shape that responds to its tight site between Signal Hill and the harbour. The stadium has been criticised for its post-World Cup underuse, but on rugby and football match days it pulls a vibrant crowd.

The exterior is one of the city's more striking pieces of contemporary architecture and is worth a walk-around even if there's nothing on. Tours of the interior run on most weekdays; the Green Point Park surrounding the stadium is a good central green space with a children's playground and a small biodiversity garden.
