Heritage Square

Restored 18th-century Cape Dutch and Georgian townhouses around a quiet central courtyard

Heritage Square is a block of restored 18th and early 19th-century Cape Dutch and Georgian townhouses around a central courtyard in the lower part of De Waterkant, near the junction of Shortmarket and Bree streets. It is one of the better-preserved examples of early Cape Town architecture remaining in the city centre.

The inner courtyard is shaded and relatively quiet despite its central location. Several restaurants and a popular bar occupy the restored buildings. The cobbled entrance passage from Shortmarket Street gives little hint of the courtyard beyond.
