Devil's Peak

1,000-metre peak forming the eastern end of the Table Mountain massif

Devil's Peak rises sharply at the eastern end of the Table Mountain range, a 1,000-metre summit that gets its name from the cloud known as "the tablecloth" that spills over Table Mountain when the southeaster blows — folklore attributes it to a smoking contest between a Dutch pirate and the devil.

Several hiking paths approach the summit, the most popular starting at Tafelberg Road. The four-hour return walk is steep but not technical, with one short scrambling section near the top. The view from the summit covers central Cape Town, the harbour, the Atlantic seaboard, and on a clear day to Cape Hangklip across False Bay. The area is busy with mountain-runners at weekends.
