Long March to Freedom

Over 100 life-size statues of South African freedom fighters

The Long March to Freedom is a remarkable public-art project: a procession of more than 100 life-size bronze statues of South Africans who fought against colonialism and apartheid, from nineteenth-century chiefs and amaXhosa leaders through to twentieth-century union organisers, anti-apartheid activists and politicians. The figures walk in a long single column, captured mid-stride.

The collection has moved around over the years — at various times it has been displayed at Fountains Valley in Pretoria and on V&A Waterfront sites in Cape Town. Check the current location before visiting. Whatever the venue, it is worth the time; the cumulative effect of all those striding figures is unexpectedly powerful.
