Stevenson Gallery

Leading contemporary African art gallery in the Buchanan Building warehouse

Stevenson occupies the ground floor of the Buchanan Building at 160 Sir Lowry Road, a restored industrial space at the edge of Woodstock. Founded in 2003, it's one of South Africa's most internationally respected contemporary art galleries, representing artists from across the continent with an exhibition programme that regularly travels to art fairs in Europe and the US. Shows rotate every few weeks and range from painting and photography to large-scale installation.

The gallery is free to enter and unintimidating for casual visitors despite its serious reputation — staff are generally happy to talk through current shows. It pairs well with a wider Woodstock gallery circuit that includes Side Street Studios and the smaller spaces along Albert Road. Open Tuesday to Friday and Saturday mornings; closed Sundays and Mondays.
