Giant's Castle

Central Drakensberg nature reserve beneath a basalt buttress, known for hiking and San rock art.

Giant's Castle is a nature reserve in the Central Drakensberg, named after the massive basalt buttress that dominates its skyline. If you are looking for serious hiking without the crowds, this is one of the best spots in the range. It is entirely possible to spend a day on the trails and see nobody but the game guard at the park entrance.

The reserve is famous for its San rock art. The Main Caves shelter contains over 500 individual paintings, some estimated to be thousands of years old, and a small on-site museum explains what is known about the artists and their world. For even better-preserved rock art, make the trip to nearby Kamberg -- the paintings there are among the finest in the Drakensberg.

The birding here is excellent, particularly for raptors. A hide near the rest camp is set up for bearded vulture (lammergeier) viewing, with bones put out during winter to attract these rare birds. Giant's Castle is reached from Estcourt or Mooi River, both on the N3 between Durban and Johannesburg.
