Mossel Bay is the western gateway to the Garden Route, but it has more substance than that label suggests. It is a working harbour town with warm beaches, sandstone cliffs, old maritime history, and some of the most important early human archaeology in South Africa.
The headline stop is the Pinnacle Point cave landscape, interpreted through the Point of Human Origins, where evidence of early modern human behaviour pushes the town's story far beyond the usual colonial timeline. In town, the Dias Museum Complex anchors the Portuguese-era history around the Post Office Tree and the replica caravel.
Mossel Bay is also easy to enjoy without a museum plan. Walk the Cape St Blaize Trail, climb to the lighthouse area, or spend a slower afternoon at Santos Beach. It is busier and more built-up than Wilderness or Knysna, but the mix of archaeology, coast, and harbour gives it a clear identity.
