Chapman's Peak Drive

The Chapman's Peak Drive hugs the cliff face between Hout Bay and Noordhoek, with the Atlantic Ocean a sheer drop below and the granite face of Chapman's Peak rising steeply above. The nine-kilometre stretch passes through 114 curves cut into the mountainside, with frequent lay-bys offering views that stop traffic in both directions.

The drive is at its best in the late afternoon, when the light turns the water gold and the shadow of the peak reaches across the bay. From the Noordhoek end you can continue south around the peninsula or loop back. There are several hiking trails that branch off from the road, and the viewpoint at the top of the cutting is a worthwhile stop. A toll applies in both directions; check that the road is open before setting out, as rockfalls still occasionally require closure.

A story
Chapman's Peak Drive was blasted into the cliff face in the early twentieth century by convict labour, a feat that required removing hundreds of thousands of tonnes of rock to create a shelf road only a few metres wide in places. The road was closed periodically for decades due to rockfalls, then underwent a R400 million reconstruction and reopening in 2003 — it now includes tunnels, netting, and a toll gate. When it's open, it's one of the world's great coastal roads.
