The Sentinel

The Sentinel (also called Hangberg) is the dramatic peak marking the western lip of Hout Bay's entrance, rising almost vertically from the sea to around 330 metres. It forms the other half of the bay's dramatic headland frame, paired with the mountains to the east to create the enclosed valley that gives Hout Bay its character.

The Sentinel can be hiked via a trail that starts near Hout Bay harbour — it is a strenuous climb that rewards with views back across the bay, down the Kommetjie coast, and out to Duiker Island. The trail is well-maintained but steep, and the summit ridge is exposed to wind. Allow two to three hours return. The path also passes through fynbos vegetation, and spring wildflowers (August–October) are good.

A story
The Sentinel is the guardian of a surf break called Dungeons, which lies directly beneath the cliff face in deep water offshore. When Atlantic swells combine with the right swell period — typically in winter — waves of up to 20 metres form here, and it has hosted the Red Bull Big Wave Africa competition. Most visitors see only the peak above; what happens in the water below on the right swell day is something else entirely.
