The definitive museum of apartheid South Africa, opened in 2001 on a site adjacent to the Gold Reef City theme park (the original owners built the museum as a condition of their casino licence). Entry is random: you are assigned "white" or "non-white" at the door and pass through separate corridors, a small but sobering introduction to what the whole system was about. The exhibits cover the 1948–1994 period with unflinching detail. Allow three hours.
