Johannesburg's sights are mostly tied to the history of apartheid and, behind it, to gold. The Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill are essential — not cheerful, but essential — and a guided tour of Soweto is the standard afternoon. Further out, the Cradle of Humankind is an excellent half-day escape to the fossil caves that gave the world the Australopithecines.
