Melville's 7th Street is the traditional bar district — a strip of independent bars, live music venues, and restaurants that draws a local crowd and stays lively until late. It is scruffy and genuine in a way that the northern suburbs are not. Braamfontein, around the Neighbourgoods Market, is the newer scene: craft beer bars, serious coffee shops, and a student energy that comes from the nearby universities.
Rosebank has the most polished options — bars in The Zone and the surrounding streets that are comfortable and easy without much edge. Most bars across the city stay open until 2am or later on weekends. Uber is the right way to move between neighbourhoods after dark — driving between Melville and Rosebank after a few drinks is not worth the risk, and the distances are not walk-friendly.
