Moyo at Melrose Arch is a pan-African restaurant with genuine ambition: the menu draws from across the continent rather than defaulting to South African standards. Mozambican peri-peri prawns, West African peanut stew, Cape Malay curry, Kenyan nyama choma — it is uneven in the way that ambitious menus tend to be, but the best dishes are very good and the breadth of reference is enjoyable if you are curious about African food beyond braai culture.
The Melrose Arch precinct itself is a purpose-built upmarket development that lacks character in the way all purpose-built precincts do, but Moyo works well within it. The outdoor terrace is popular for long weekend lunches, which is really how it should be experienced — unhurried, with a decent South African wine, no particular agenda. It is a favourite with Johannesburg's middle class for a reason.
