Cango Caves

About 30 kilometres north of town on the R328, the Cango Caves are one of Africa's great limestone cave systems. The main chamber, called Van Zyl's Hall, is 107 metres long and 16 metres high — a cathedral of stalactites and stalagmites that have been growing for hundreds of thousands of years.

The Heritage Tour (one hour) takes you through the main chambers at a comfortable pace. The Adventure Tour (90 minutes) adds a series of increasingly tight passages with names like the Devil's Chimney and the Postbox, requiring visitors to squeeze, crawl, and wriggle through rock. It is not for claustrophobics but is thoroughly memorable for everyone else. Tours depart on the hour throughout the day.

A story
The caves were known to San hunter-gatherers for millennia before a Boer farmer stumbled upon the main chamber in 1780. His ox had wandered into the entrance. The discovery he reported — a cavern so vast you could ride a horse inside it — was dismissed as exaggeration until others went to look.
