Highgate Ostrich Farm

One of three major ostrich show farms outside Oudtshoorn, Highgate has been operating since the early twentieth century. The one-hour guided tour takes you through an active farming operation — you will see ostriches at every stage from chick to adult, watch a feeding demonstration, and have the opportunity to sit on an ostrich's back for a photograph (the birds are remarkably unbothered by this).

The tour covers the full lifecycle of commercial ostrich farming: eggs, incubation, feathers, leather, and the famous ostrich meat. You will hear more about ostrich biology than you ever expected — they have the largest eyes of any land animal, they are surprisingly aggressive toward each other, and their kick can kill. The farm has good pathways and is suitable for families with children.

A story
An adult ostrich can run at 70 kilometres per hour and maintain 50 km/h for 30 minutes — faster than any other bird and faster than most horses. What they cannot do is fly. Their wings are useless for anything except balance and thermoregulation, which makes the ostrich farmers' practice of jockeying them for tourists both absurd and impressive.
