Meiringspoort

A 25-kilometre gorge through the Swartberg Mountains, reached by driving east from Oudtshoorn on the N12 toward Beaufort West. The tar road runs alongside the Meiring River, crossing it several times, through vertical red sandstone walls that tower several hundred metres overhead. It is accessible by ordinary car and far less strenuous than the Swartberg Pass — a spectacular drive that takes about 45 minutes one way.

The gorge has a waterfall at the midpoint with a small parking area and picnic spot. The drive through and back is a good half-day outing from Oudtshoorn. After heavy rain the river rises and the road sometimes floods — check conditions before visiting in the wet season (roughly February to April).
