The Berg River Bird Sanctuary runs along the riverbanks north of the town centre and shelters over 130 bird species within its wetland and riparian habitats. The Malachite Kingfisher — small, jewel-bright, and improbably fast — is regularly spotted along the reed-fringed banks. African Fish Eagles circle overhead. Herons, egrets, and ducks complete a picture that feels far from a busy Winelands town.
A network of paths runs through the sanctuary, and early morning is the best time to visit when the birds are most active and the light is soft. The sanctuary is free to enter and easily reached from the town centre on foot or by bicycle. It makes a pleasant contrast to the wine cellars and grand architecture that dominate most Paarl itineraries.
