When to Go

Paarl's Mediterranean climate makes it pleasant year-round, but there are distinct seasons. Summer (December–February) is hot and dry, with temperatures regularly reaching 35°C. This is when the wine estates are most active — harvest happens from January to March — and many visitors arrive. The valley is green and beautiful but the heat can be oppressive at midday.

Autumn (March–May) is the favourite season for many. The harvest is complete, the vine leaves turn orange and red, the crowds thin, and temperatures drop to a comfortable 20–25°C. Accommodation prices also fall after the peak season. Winter (June–August) is cool and rainy — this is when the Cape mountains get their snow — but the estates are open and there are far fewer visitors. Spring (September–November) brings wildflowers to the mountain slopes and mild temperatures.

The Nederburg wine auction, held each April, is a major annual event that brings serious wine buyers and enthusiasts from around the world.
