Main Street (Paarl)

Paarl's Main Street is one of the longest in South Africa — over ten kilometres — and driving or walking its length is in itself an architectural experience. The street is lined with Cape Dutch homesteads, Georgian and Victorian buildings, old oak trees, and the occasional Victorian church. The architecture spans three centuries and gives Paarl a more layered streetscape than most Winelands towns.

The older end of Main Street, closest to the Berg River, has the most historic concentration. The Paarl Museum, housed in a 18th-century building, tells the story of the town and the Winelands. The Strooidakkerk (thatched church), the oldest surviving Dutch Reformed church building in South Africa, is on a side street off the main road. Walking this section in the morning, when the oaks cast long shadows and the light is gentle, is a genuinely pleasant way to spend an hour.
