The Strooidakkerk (Thatched Church) is a remarkable little church in the older part of Paarl, built in the early 19th century in the Cape vernacular style. The whitewashed walls, simple timber interior, and distinctive thatched roof make it one of the best-preserved examples of early Cape ecclesiastical architecture in the country.
The church is still in use as an active congregation, which means access is sometimes limited, but the exterior is always visible and the courtyard around it is peaceful. It stands in contrast to the grander Victorian churches built later along the same street, and the modesty of its scale is part of its charm. The small cemetery adjacent to it has graves dating to the 18th century.
