Upington

Orange River oasis town where vineyards, palms, and Kalahari roads meet in the Northern Cape.

Upington is a green interruption in a very dry part of South Africa. The Orange River runs through town, feeding vineyards, date palms, gardens, and a strip of shade before the road pushes back into the Kalahari.

The town is not beautiful in a polished way, but it has a strong local rhythm. Start at the Kalahari-Oranje Museum, housed in the old mission station, then follow the river mood through the palms, wine cellars, and a drink on Sakkie se Arkie.

Upington also works as a base for the wider Green Kalahari. Spitskop Nature Reserve is close enough for a short drive among desert-adapted wildlife, while Augrabies Falls and the Kgalagadi are the longer, bigger prizes west and north.

Bars and Cafes

Upington's most memorable drink is on the Orange River, where the view matters as much as the glass.
