El Kurru

Early Kushite royal cemetery south of Karima, known for painted underground tombs.

El Kurru is quieter than Jebel Barkal and Nuri, but for many travellers it is the most moving of the Napatan sites. The surface remains are battered, yet some underground tomb chambers preserve painted decoration that brings the royal cemetery back to life.

The site sits south of Karima and is usually visited by private vehicle as part of a loop through the Napatan landscape. Take a torch if you have one, and ask locally about access to the tomb interiors before setting out.

A story
El Kurru includes burials of the 25th Dynasty rulers who projected Kushite power north into Egypt. The above-ground monuments are ruined, but the painted chambers below the sand preserve a more intimate trace of royal belief.
