Karima lies on the Nile in Northern State, roughly 400 km north of Khartoum. Before the war, travellers reached it by long-distance bus, private vehicle, or the Nile-side road through Atbara and Merowe. Conditions have changed sharply since 2023; check security, fuel, bridges, and permits before planning anything.
For the archaeological sites, arrange a car locally. Jebel Barkal can be reached from town, but Nuri, El Kurru, and the smaller sites are spread along both sides of the Nile.
