Nuri Pyramids

Royal Napatan cemetery across the Nile, including the pyramid of Taharqa.

Nuri lies across the Nile from Karima, a field of steep-sided pyramids and low tombs scattered in the desert. The site is less visually dense than Meroƫ, but historically it is immense: this was the royal cemetery of Napata, including the tomb of Taharqa, the Kushite pharaoh who ruled Egypt.

The pyramids have suffered from time, treasure-hunting, and weather, yet the setting is powerful. Come early, when the sand is cool and the light still has texture. You need a vehicle to get here comfortably from Karima.

A story
Taharqa, one of the Kushite pharaohs who ruled Egypt's 25th Dynasty, chose Nuri for his burial and built the largest pyramid at the site. Later kings and queens followed him, turning this dry bank of the Nile into a royal cemetery.
