Temple of Mut

Rock-cut temple tucked into Jebel Barkal, with traces of carved and painted decoration.

The Temple of Mut is smaller and more intimate than the Amun temple, cut partly into the rock at the base of Jebel Barkal. Its setting is the attraction: a sacred chamber pressed into the mountain itself, away from the open courts and sun-glare of the main complex.

Decoration survives only in fragments, so this is a place to slow down and look closely. It is best visited together with the Amun temple and the climb up Jebel Barkal, when the whole sacred complex can be understood in one sweep.
