Port Sudan's draws are almost entirely underwater or along the coast. The Red Sea reefs here are among the best-preserved in the world — low visitor numbers and geographical isolation have kept them in extraordinary condition. When travel to the region is feasible, it is primarily done on liveaboard dive boats, which give access to the offshore atolls and wrecks that made Jacques Cousteau famous.
On land, the ruined Ottoman port city of Suakin about 60 km south is the main historical attraction — a hauntingly beautiful ghost town of crumbling coral-block buildings.
Note: As of 2024, Sudan is in a state of active civil conflict. Check current travel advisories from your government before making any plans.
