Currency
The currency is the Swazi Lilangeni (plural: Emalangeni; ISO code: SZL), pegged at 1:1 to the South African Rand. The Rand is accepted everywhere, which makes crossing from South Africa convenient — there is no need to exchange before you arrive. Emalangeni cannot be converted back once you leave, so spend or exchange them before crossing the border.
ATMs are available in Mbabane and Manzini and at most border towns. Major credit cards are accepted at hotels and larger restaurants but cash is essential in rural areas and markets.
Visas
Many nationalities, including citizens of the US, UK, EU, and most Commonwealth countries, can enter visa-free for 30 days. Extensions are available at the Ministry of Home Affairs in Mbabane. Eswatini introduced an eVisa system in 2025, which can be used by nationalities that do not qualify for visa-free entry. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates and have two blank pages.
Health
Eswatini has one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in the world, which has affected life expectancy and healthcare capacity. Malaria is a risk in the lower-lying areas of the country, particularly the Lowveld and Lubombo regions — take appropriate precautions if visiting these areas between October and April. Tap water in Mbabane and Manzini is generally treated; elsewhere, stick to bottled or filtered water.
Safety
Eswatini is generally safe by regional standards. Petty theft occurs in busy market areas in Manzini; keep an eye on your belongings and do not display expensive equipment openly. Road safety is a more significant concern than crime — drive carefully, especially at night.
Communications
Mobile coverage is reasonable across most of the country. MTN and Eswatini Mobile (EMOS) are the main operators. International roaming works with most South African and European SIM cards. International dial code: +268.
Electricity
South African-style three-pin round plugs (Type M), 220-230V. Most hotels also have European two-pin sockets.
