The cheapest and best food in Bagamoyo is at the beach behind the fish market — half a dozen women grill the morning catch over charcoal and serve it with ugali, rice, or chips for a few thousand shillings. Octopus, kingfish, and prawns are usually available; ask before ordering.
For sit-down meals, the hotels along Ocean Road and at Nunge have restaurants open to the public, with Swahili-Indian menus heavy on coconut curries and fresh-caught fish. The Poa Poa beach bar and restaurant on the road north of town is one of the more reliable spots, with proper coffee and a long menu. In town, Mama Mzee on the road past the Catholic Mission serves the best plate of mishkaki (grilled meat skewers) and ugali in Bagamoyo.
