Getting There

Bagamoyo is about 75 km north of Dar es Salaam on a good tarmac road — under two hours by car in normal traffic. Dala-dala minibuses run constantly from Mwenge in northern Dar throughout the day for a few thousand shillings. Faster private taxis are easily arranged in Dar.

Most travellers come on a day trip from Dar es Salaam, but Bagamoyo is more rewarding overnight — the German-era buildings glow at sunset and the old town quietens in a way the day-trip crowds never see. A handful of small hotels along the beach and in the historic centre cover most budgets.

There is no airport in Bagamoyo. Julius Nyerere International in Dar es Salaam is the gateway for international flights. Onward ferry connections to Zanzibar run from Dar — there are no direct boats from Bagamoyo any more.
