Central Mwanza is walkable but spread out, and the climate makes long walks at midday unpleasant. The standard local transport is the dala-dala — small minibus, fixed routes, very cheap — and bajaji (auto-rickshaw), which work well for short hops in the centre and to Capripoint. Boda-boda motorbike taxis are faster but less safe and best avoided unless you are confident on the back.
Standard taxis are easy to find at the airport, the bus stand, and outside the larger hotels; agree the price before getting in. For tourists, a half-day with a hired car and driver from the hotel is the most efficient way to combine Bujora, the fish market, and Saanane in a single outing.
For Saanane Island and other lake destinations, hire boats are arranged at the small jetty by the National Park office. There is no formal water taxi system across the lake within the city.
