Things to Do

Mwanza is not a sightseeing city in the usual sense — it is a busy, hot, sprawling port that earns its nickname "Rock City" from the giant granite boulders rolling down to and into the lake. The set-piece sights are a handful: the famous Bismarck Rock balanced in the harbour, the tiny Saanane Island National Park a fifteen-minute boat ride from the centre, and the rambling Catholic mission and Sukuma Museum at Bujora. Beyond that, the appeal is the lakeshore itself: long sunsets, fish markets, dhow trips, and the staging-post atmosphere of a city that supplies the western Serengeti and the islands of Lake Victoria.
