Capripoint

The upmarket residential peninsula south of the city centre, with the best lakeshore walks and the Yacht Club.

Capripoint is the rounded peninsula that pokes out into Lake Victoria immediately south of central Mwanza. The peninsula has long been the city's most desirable residential address — Indian-owned houses, German colonial bungalows under the trees, and a few discreet hotels. The lakeshore road around the peninsula is the most pleasant walk in the city, particularly in the late afternoon when the heat eases.

The Mwanza Yacht Club sits towards the tip of the peninsula and welcomes day visitors for a modest fee — its lakeshore bar is one of the city's standard sundowner spots, and it has a small swimming dock. From the Yacht Club's beach there is a clear view across to Saanane Island and the boats coming in and out of the harbour. There are no formal sights as such; the appeal is the texture and the air, both noticeably cleaner here than in the dusty downtown.
