Catholic Cathedral and Diocese

The seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Njombe is the largest church in the town, a substantial 20th-century brick building near the centre. It is the most visible of the cluster of mission churches that line Njombe's main street — Lutheran, Catholic, Anglican, Moravian, and several Pentecostal denominations all within a few hundred metres.

Visitors are welcome at most services. Sunday morning Mass in Swahili is well attended and the choir is excellent. The mission compound houses a primary school, a teacher-training college, and a sports field that doubles as the town's main weekend venue.

A story
The first German Lutheran missionaries reached Njombe in 1898, and Catholic Benedictines followed a few years later. The two missions effectively founded the modern town — its hospital, secondary schools, and printing press all began as mission projects.
